I sat in an Uber heading to the JKIA airport in Nairobi going through my normal checklist in case I forgot something and it’s not be too late to turn back. I was excited to head to the Philippines but nervous as I always get before I head to any new destination (the fear of the unknown).
I never really worried about using China Southern Airlines, I guess I just thought ok, its a ‘budget airline’ so just as long as I get there “I’m cool”. As I got out of the Uber to check into my flight, I couldn’t find any signs of China Southern Airlines, so I asked around and got told to go to the Kenya Airways terminal. I then asked around again and got told to check into China Southern with Kenya Airways.
Thank GOD there wasn’t a long line with 3 couples ahead of me, but it then took 50 minutes to check in and in that time I watched the line behind me grow and at least 5 families freaking out as they then missed their check in time due to the short staff and delays.
Kenyan Airways was severely understaffed and just slow! There weren’t any signs that China Southern Airlines was running via Kenyan Airways but after the long wait and thanking GOD I got there earlier than the 2 hours before a flight I then got through and thought the worst is over…. …WRONGGG
After a 15 hour flight, I landed in Guangzhou transiting for my next flight to Manila, the transfer process was so long that airport workers kept running up and down to take people up to the gates before they miss their flight due to how long the transit lines were, after a 50 minute wait, I ended up being one of those people, it took way to long and because I didn’t reach the transfer desk on time they rushed me to the gate to then tell me I wouldn’t get my baggage when I get to Manila but I would get it the next day!
So as soon as I landed (and already in a grumpy mood) I had to line up for another hour to fill out a form for my bag where they gave me a number and told me to ring it in the morning to check what time my bag would arrive and a taxi would drop it my hotel so I guess I felt better after hearing that.
The next day, I rang the number and it was on a busy tone the WHOLE DAY! I then tried to ring the general numbers on their website and no one could help me. it got to 4pm and I decided to head back to the airport. I went from one office to another and finally the China Southern staff told me yes your bag is landing in the next hour so just wait. I waited and by 5:30 again NO BAG! I had to fill another form where again I wasn’t the only one, 10 more people from the new flight were complaining.
It wasn’t until the next end of day that they sent my bag in an Uber and called me downstairs from the hotel to pick it up! I was told I was lucky I even got my bag back, others get their bags back after their holiday is done!
I would just like to warn everyone to never use them! This was one of my experiences! I unfortunately had a return flight with them so on my way back I unfortuanelty had to go back via guaghzhou and it took 3 hours to get through the transfer desk area, people in line ended up sitting on the floor and moving through the line.
Needless to say, it would be your choice of what you would like to do but this is my personal experience and had to share it with you all. Comment below if you have gone through anything similar with them? Or maybe you liked your experience?
